A man in a Chhattisgarh village smothered his pregnant wife to death in a fit of anger after she refused to have sex with him, the police said Sunday.

The incident took place on the night of June 16-17 at Singarpur village under the Sarangarh police station in Raigarh district, some 290 km from here.

While the woman's death was initially described by her in-laws as an accident, the facts came to light only Sunday when her spouse Ganeshram, 26, was arrested on murder charges.

He was nabbed on the basis of a post-mortem report that confirmed the death was caused by strangulation, Sarangarh police station in-charge Hemprakash Naik told reporters.

Ganeshram's parents too were arrested for hiding the crime.

"Within an hour of his arrest, Ganeshram confessed to killing his wife as she did not agree to his demand for sex. She refused because of her advanced pregnancy and she abused him, calling him a dog," Naik said.
