As many as 50 cops had to form a safety net around Celina Jaitly after she performed an entertainment act at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Gurgaon, on the outskirts of Delhi, on Sunday evening. Celina's act drove the several-thousand strong crowd that had collected at the stadium for the 19th match of the Indian Cricket League, Edelweiss Challenge, wild.
"The crowd went ballistic," the actress told HT Café, "Anything could have happened. The car in which I was leaving was surrounded and smashed." Before the match betweeen the Delhi Giants and the Lahore Badshahs, Celina had made an entry around 7 pm for her act, accompanied by a troupe of dancers. The act was typically Bollywood which had the audience roaring for more. The actress and former Miss India, made her last entry, as it is called, around 8.30 pm. Among her dance performances, there were Aafreen ho tum ( Red) and Boom Shakalaka from the film Shakalaka Boom Boom and Beedi jalai le and Namak Ishq ka ( Omkara ). The audience was in a frenzy and police-plus-security guards had to bring the mobs under control. Her experience Celina Jaitley said that she had expected some support and show of gallantry, from the cricketers on the spot, but alleged that two of them in fact heckled her and said, "Bandh karo yeh sab tamasha" and "Has she caught Osama Bin Laden or what?" Not done Upset by the remarks, Jaitly was contemplating filing a police case against those who made the offensive remarks. Or demand a public apology. The actress who returned to Mumbai on Monday afternoon was visibly shaken by the crowd frenzy that had ensued and said, "I wish, some of the players had come tomy defence.. but.." Caught in a situation Other actresses who have had to contend with unwelcome attention This year while performing at the Sahara Star Hotel, Koena Mitra caught the eye of a six-foot stalker who cornered the actress for a picture prior to the New Year Eve's show. But before the camera could go click, click, he asked the actress if he could hold her close and was shooed away by the security. Through the show his eyes were glued on Mitra's every move and afterwards when she, along with Bipasha Basu and Tanushree Dutta, was on her way to the VVIP lounge to relax, he showed up and insisted on shaking her hand. Crushing it, he than grabbed her wrist and tried to pull her towards him. A spirited Mitra rained blows on him even as the security came rushing to her rescue again. Mitra had earlier been accosted at another New Year performance at Hotel JW Marriott. A stranger manhandled her in front of the media covering the event. Slapped Mitra's best buddy Tanushree Dutta herself was at the receiving end of unwanted attention in Bangalore on January 1 this year soon after the Sahara Star performance. A man tried to act fresh with her.. she slapped him. Another Bengali beauty, Bipasha Basu was apparently harassed in the car when she was being escorted to the India Day Parade at Edison Township in New Jersey on August 13, 2006. Basu who was the Grand Marshal, did not join the parade but showed up on stage and tried to convey what had happened. She was hushed up by the organisers who later blamed her for turning up late. The actress did not file a criminal complaint and later denied harassment but complained of disorganisation. Beat it In 2003, at a promotional event for Jism at Planet M in Mumbai, Basu had been mobbed. A few days earlier, at a city nightspot, Rain, a man had tried to fondle her. He was beaten up by her beau John Abraham. Rakhi Sawant has had to contend with such uncouth behaviour on her shows. But the incident that made headlines happened at Mika's birthday bash at Cinderella hour. In full view of the gathered TV channels, the singer swooped down on Sawant and smooched her. Kissa kiss ka Another kiss that ignited a MMS frenzy was Shahid Kapoor's lip-lock with Kareena Kapoor. It was a private moment made public. Not so well-known is another MMS clip of newcomer Mona Chopra changing her clothes on the sets.
