A man in a Madhya Pradesh village has been arrested for brutally killing his seven-month-old daughter, the police said Sunday.

Ranjit, who owns a grocery shop in Amarpura village in Jabalpur district, killed his youngest daughter Friday by strangulating her because he did not want another girl child, his wife Satyavati told the police.

The couple has seven children, including two boys.

Satyavati was pressurised by family members not to disclose the baby's murder. The infant's last rites were performed the same day, but the police nabbed Ranjit on a tip-off.

One of his daughters, Santoshi Bai, 7, told the police that she saw her father strangulating her younger sister. Satyavati too then broke down and said that Ranjit used to often beat her up for bearing so many girls.

The police have registered a case against Ranjit.
