Lily Allen has been left devastated after suffering a miscarriage.

The Smile singer, who revealed she was expecting her first child with Chemical Brothers star Ed Simons last December, lost her unborn baby after returning from a romantic break in The Maldives.

Lily's spokesman said: "We can confirm that Lily Allen has suffered a miscarriage. She and her partner Ed Simons will be making no further comment and we ask that their privacy be respected during this difficult time."

The 22-year-old star, who is said to be "in a state of shock", had been excited about impending motherhood and had toned down her partying lifestyle after discovering the happy news.

A source told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "They are absolutely heartbroken. Lily's entire outlook on life changed after she found out she was pregnant.

"She was looking forward to being a mum and starting a family with Ed. She had turned her back on her party girl image and turned over a new leaf. They are surrounded by friends and family offering support. It is a really difficult time for them."

Lily fell for Ed, 37, after watching a Chemical Brothers concert in London last September. Soon after her pregnancy was announced, Lily revealed she was looking forward to a "stable" family life. She said: "I've looked forward to being stable my whole life. I have my eyes on the prize - having kids, getting married, cooking dinner and doing homework with my children."
