On an average, it's estimated that 60 per cent of men and 40 per cent of women the world over, indulge in extra-marital affairs. Some are one-night stands while the others are intimate relationships that last for a long time.

Very often, people suspect those working in the airlines and glamour industry as indulging in clandestine affairs at work. But it's common in other workplaces too.

In my 25 years of practice as a sexologist and marriage counsellor, I've come across many women too who're involved in extra-marital affairs.

Feeling safe
Women feel safe to indulge in extra-marital affairs.. female contraceptive pills reduce the chances of pregnancy. It's common for many married women to get involved in an office relationship.

There are various reasons for them to get involved in office romance - long working hours together, working towards a common goal and difficulty in maintaining a distance.

In a majority of cases, the man is looking for sex while a woman develops physical proximity with a man when she works closely with him.

Blame game
Office hours are a safe period for many couples to indulge in an affair because it's easy to have clandestine meetings under the pretext of official meetings and trade fairs.

Besides, people outside the office don't normally smell an office romance.. many don't believe it's possible. When people learn of their partners' affairs, the most common question is, "Why?"

And the answers they come up with are usually based on personal blame.. they blame themselves, their partners, their relationship or the third party. They see it strictly as a personal failure of the people involved.

But in reality there are different reasons for this - attraction, sex, companionship, admiration, power, novelty, excite ment, risk, challenge, curiosity, enhanced self-image, a desire to escape or find relief from a painful relationship and boredom, desire to fill gaps in an existing relationship or punish one's partner.

My case studies:
A 55-year-old man with grown-up college kids got involved with his young secretary. They stayed back in office and worked late hours.. the excuse was they had to complete their pending work. She also accompanied him on his trips abroad. He set her up in a luxurious flat. She dumped him when she found another eligible man.

A happily married woman, who worked for a NGO, got involved with her married boss. She was attractive with a well-maintained figure and always dressed in revealing clothes. Their work took them to remote places.. they stayed there for days.

The close proximity between them and the fact that she was ambitious, resulted in them getting involved with each other.. she had no qualms about using sex as a tool to further her career.

A bad outcome of this affair was the woman developed sexually transmitted diseases, leading to infertility.. the man had sexual relationships with other women also.

However, the woman had no choice but to carry on with him because her job was at stake. The affair is still on.. she has made quick jumps in her career and is in a position to take many important decisions in office.
